A Family Tree

STAUDT FAMILY
Michael Staudt traveled (possibly with his fiancée Catherine Stein and her mother Adgelena) to Manitowoc County, Wisconsin in 1854. They had a 40 acre dairy farm in Kossuth township where they raised 10 children (5 boys & 5 girls) and were the grandparents to 12 children. His obituary said he arrived from Helfant, Kreis Saarburg , Rheinpreussen. Not officially Germany yet but Prussia and controlled and under French rule. Social and military unrest was the way of life as French, German and other internal forces have made life miserable causing many to flee into exile and emigration. I have interpreted that when my mother (Margaret Mary Staudt Pfeiffer) wrote on a family tree she made in 1971, how Michael and Catherine made a "wedding trip to USA" that they were already married. However you will see below they married after their arrival on Feb.11, 1855. It is quite possible too, that Michael met his life mate here but it's not as romantic as the two sailing off to start a new life together. Mathew (Matheis) Peter Staudt was one of their 10 children who later married Sarah Maria Murphy in New London, WI on May 1st. ,1890. What follows mainly covers the family's life in the Manitowoc area. Mom would often talk of our Irish heritage (Murphy, McNamarra ) but there may be more 'bier' then Guinness in our blood. Still, I look forward to finding out how green our shamrock glows.
Some of the following is from the German language weekly newspaper Der Nord-Westen (The North Western) that was translated, edited and posted on-line by Harold E. Bergman. The paper was published from the 1860's to the early 1900's.
Note: Staudt was often misspelled as Stout, Staut and even Starl & Staub as below. Most of the following was simply 'cut & paste' from various documents I located and I was at the mercy of those who entered the original info. I have put my own notes in brackets or italicized so as not to be construed as part of the records. Some of the first names may vary also, as Matthias & Mathew, or Magdalena & Adgelena

(Francis Creek was the nearest community to the Michael Staudt farm and where the children attended school and church so I posted the following, Tim)
An Interview with Viola Herman Krainik - September, 1996
"Interview with Viola Herman Krainik", that had been published in the October (1996) Senior Action News. It was part of a handout at a Francis Creek/Rockwood senior citizens. Viola is the widow of Joseph Krainik.

The settlement was originally named French Creek by a Frenchmen, Joseph Poquin, who as early as 1842 had built a stopping place south of the creek and north of St. Anne's present cemetery. As there was another French Creek in the state, it was re-named Francis Creek by the founder of the Franciscan Order of St. Francis of Assisi (Italy-France). The government sought to change the name to Axelyn in 1917, due to another Francis Creek existing in the State, but a petition was circulated and the name stayed Francis Creek. In 1848, Casper Hessel purchased 30 acres of land for $60. Taxes were $5.04 because it was mostly swampland. He later purchased 80 acres from the government when Wisconsin became a state. The deed was signed by President Zachary Taylor. Many German immigrants settled in Wisconsin at this time. Viola Herman Krainik is Casper's great-granddaughter. She was born in the town of Kossuth, lived on a farm where the First National Bank is presently located, and attended St. Anne's School as a child. Her parents, Luke Herman and Emma Hessel, wanted her to get an education. At the time, Rockwood had a two-year high school. After that, she attended Lincoln High School, which was at its present location, graduating in 1927, the third class at the new school. The first bank was established in Francis Creek in 1916 in Fred Baugniet's living room. A site was purchased in 1917, and the State Bank of Francis Creek opened with $15,000 in capital stock. John Ewen was the first president and Fred Baugniet the first cashier. Presently, the last occupant of the original building was the Kossuth Mutual Insurance Company. The first church was located near the cemetery. Besides the bank, Catholic Church and school, early businesses in Francis Creek included a blacksmith shop, saw mill, two cheese factories, three general stores, two butcher shops, Hessel's Hotel and Bowling Alley, barber shop, feed mill, hardware store, two lumber companies, two dance halls, five taverns, Paulyand Pauly Cheese Company storage, a doctor (Dr. Stueck) and a dentist (Dr. Gee)who had their offices above the bank. The two meat suppliers would truck their wares to country homes on alternate days in the '30s when "stores on wheels" were the mode. The Hessel-Ewen families were influential in establishing many of the first businesses for the growth of the village. The present businesses are a restaurant, beauty shop, mini-mart, post office, gas station and garage, two bars, and two trucking companies. Francis Creek also boasts a lovely park where the annual "French Creek Days" celebration takes place in July. Only the church (the congregation has observed 135 years) and the original bank building have survived all the changes over the years. Viola remembers driving cattle through the village and over the railroad tracks.
The Right of Way Contract was signed with the railroad in 1905 and was completed in 1906. They received $1.00 with the agreement that a depot would be built at the site. In October, 1996, the railroad tracks were removed after 90 years of service, ending the era of railroad service in the village. The railroad continues to run from Manitowoc to the Rockwell Limestone Quarry in Rockwood. The Rockwell Plant was founded in 1906 by the late Michael Brisch Sr. of Chicago. Lime is manufactured from the rock which is composed of calcium, carbon and oxygen and makes up 1/3 of the bed rock of the region. The Allwood Company, originated in 1913 by Miss Mary Squires and Dr. Jessie Carpenter of Chicago, was purchased by Brisch in 1949. Through the years, the company kept up with modern technology and remains in the family name. Originally, Rockwood had a grocery store. Kleman's ButcherShop and large school. The Hessel Store, established in 1915, now houses apartments. The Goss family has its roots in Rockwood, which got national recognition at the time of the wedding of Rory Meyer and Julius LaRosa. Volleyball at the "Big Apple" is the attraction these days. The dance hall remains but no longer resounds with polkas and waltzes. The Lutheran Church is a vital part of the community.

I would still like to gather information about grandpa Edwin Staudt, (his family, when he moved to North Dakota etc) Also researching info on grandma Clarice and more info on the Irish ancestry (just how green does our shamrock glow?) are some things that would be enjoyable to do. I have found that there are a lot of internet sites that for a fee will provide data but there are plenty out there at no charge if one knows where and how to look. If any of you have something to add or share please let me know.

'Helfant, Kreis Saarburg, Rheinpressen' was not easy to define or locate. Seeing how that is where Michael Staudt moved from I was very interested as often where one is raised sometimes says a lot about who they were on many levels especially in times when families were not as nomadic as today. In breaking down the location I came to the following conclusions.
Rheinpreussen – was the Rhein Prussia area which is called Rheinland, Palatinate (a state in Germany) today. In the mid 1800's the area was still loosely connected with Prussia. Rheinland is located along Germany's border with France and Luxenbourg.
Kreis Saarburg – the word 'kreis' means section, as 'section Saarburg', and so…..
Saarubrg – is the actual city name and while looking at the Rheinland state area go up to where Luxenbourg, France and Germany all sort of meet you should be able to locate the large city of Trier, Gemany. Just south of Treir (approx. 20 mi.) along the Saar River is Saarburg. If your map shows where Mettlach, Germany is, Saarburg is located in the center between there and Trier. The easiest way is to Google Map the name Saarburg, Germany.
Helfant – This one is very difficult to pin down. Through the 1700's up to approximately 1805 Prussia was a loosely governed country of as many as 1,600 'states' each governed and named after its own ruling family till it was defeated by Napoleon. It was then broken down to some 200 states. And so, it is possible Helfant was the name of the ruling (house) family at one time.

(Boy, Cain & Abel's family tree would be easy!)
